Construction of an air entry occurs with the movement of air in a house through open seams and empty spaces. In addition, an air entry occurs when air moves from indoors to outdoors. Too much air movement drives up energy prices and makes a house breezy, humid or dried up.

Anyone who has ever designed or built a home already knows there is a balancing act that needs to be done. If there is too much air leakage, your home can become too drafty and cold. You could also end up paying a higher energy bill.

One of the things a builder or architect should probably ask themselves is what are the paths to air leakage. Basically, the most common pathways for air leakage can be found in penetrations drilled for plumbing, electricity, vents and other types of utility service. Some exterior devices such as light fixtures and electrical outlets can cause air to leak out of the home as well.

Gaps between the bottoms of the sill plate and an older house’s foundation are overlooked areas of air leakage, especially into the basement. Foam insulation minimizes the leakage. A foam gasket is built into new house’s to prevent this occurrence.

If you have patio doors or windows, sealants should be applied to these areas as well. Silicone caulk is one of the best sealants for this purpose given that it’s so flexible and can better withstand sudden shifts in weather conditions. Fiberglass insulation should be avoided since it is porous and is useless in stopping air from moving.

Perimeter bands located between the levels of a house are an underestimated area of air leakage. Air has a conduit through the siding gaps and navigate quite a distance away from the original entry point.

A home owner trying to block drafts has many ways to make a house air-tight. They range from a mixture of physical things to plug into gaps, to silicon sealants and foam. Plugging a hole by forcing in a caulking compound is a common way to seal drafts in small holes or gaps. For larger gaps, such as behind warped timbers, expandable foam is simple to use. It emerges from an aerosol can as a liquid, reacts with air and expands many times to pack gaps with an air-tight wad. Silicon seal, whose grip remains firm despite movement, is used to block drafts around flexible joints. Rope caulk, a traditional way to keep drafts to as minimum, is an alternative to silicon around doors and loose-fitted windows. Weather stripping can be inserted around windows too. Foam gaskets can also be forced around holes and access breaks in the exterior walls.

Older houses do yield the greatest benefit from preventing air seepage. However, proactive air sealing is preferred in the building phase or reconstruction phase. Halting or preventing air leaks is an efficient way to decrease energy usage and bills in your house.

Wind farms are a great way to capture wind energy as evidenced by the recent increases in wind turbine farm installations. Based on raw output, however, wind turbine systems do not compete well with our modern combustion based energy stations. Combustion fuels have high energy density at low cost and in most cases outperform the cost of installing and maintaining wind power.

This is not as bad as you might intially think. The reality is that the things we have grown to love are provided by a solid industrial base. These industries include manufacturing, timber, metallurgy, mining and even production of equipment used to harvest our food supply. A heavy industrial base needs very reliable power in very large quantities.

Let’s face it, when it comes to smelting ores, machining metals, and forging steel (just to name a few), these types of operations take a whole lot of juice. A large and varied heavy infrastructure like this is hard to power on wind or alternative energy alone. The motive energy and processing is too significant.

Wind turbines do makes sense in a large variety of applications, however. Wind machines are an age old, tried and true, simple way to tap a source of free energy.

Wind turbines are great for supplying residential power and for smaller industrial applications.

To illustrate, a commercial size power plant capable of 500 MegaWatt output will fit in the area of 1/4 square mile without challenge. As a comparision consider a wind farm of equivalent output. At 2 MegaWatts per wind turbine, then over 250 wind turbines would have to be put in place. Think about the amount of space this would require!

Keep in mind, also, that a steady supply of Wind is required which is not always the case.

Clearly, in locations that make sense wind power solutions should be part of our energy portfolio. But we must not abandon the advantages of our modern combustion technologies; their efficiencies and cleanliness are much better than days before, and combustion is the most potent way to meet the high energy demands of our industrial base.

The price movement of United States Oil Fund LP Units ( USO ) roughly tracks the movement in the price of spot crude oil on world markets. The strategy behind USO is stated as follows on the E-Trade website:

“The investment seeks to reflect the performance, less expenses, of the spot price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) light, sweet crude oil. The fund will invest in futures contracts for WTI light, sweet crude oil, other types of crude oil, heating oil, gasoline, natural gas and other petroleum based-fuels that are traded on exchanges. It may also invest in other oil interests such as cash-settled options on oil futures contracts, forward contracts for oil, and OTC transactions that are based on the price of oil. The fund is non diversified.”

Buying shares in USO presents a good way to invest in oil price movements without getting involved in crude oil futures contracts and the required futures contracts margin requirements and potential margin calls.

The 52 week range of USO is 25.1667 – 119.17. As I write this on February 15, 2009 the price is 25.60. Crude oil prices have collapsed since last July from a high of $147 a barrel. The collapse is certainly related to the worldwide recession currently underway, perhaps depression in some countries, but is also heavily related to the unwinding of long oil positions by hedge funds, investment banks, and large speculators due to forced selling across all asset classes to meet margin calls in falling markets.

Therefore, at least some of the extent of the price decline reflects the effects of forced liquidation rather than a drastic shift in supply and demand factors. To be sure demand for crude oil in the US and in Europe has decreased somewhat as the effects of the recession reduced economic activity. The rate of growth in demand has decreased in China and India as well but not as much as you might think. The economies of China and India may slow down to “only” a 5% or 6% growth rate for this year but that rate of growth keeps demand for oil in those counties at a level that almost offsets any decline in the West.

At current prices USO is a way to play the next price spike in oil at low risk. You can be sure that not only America is hooked on oil but that almost the entire world shares the affliction. Politicians may blabber on about alternative energy sources, and in America becoming energy dependent within ten years, but who among informed people can believe them? There is just no way that alternative energy resources can make much of a dent in oil consumption within a time period, if ever, that can prevent a real scarcity of oil and resulting high prices.

Peak Oil is real, IMHO it has already occurred, and its consequences will soon be felt by all. We had a little taste of what it can bring when oil prices rose to $147 a barrel last July. At prices above $150 a barrel the airlines are toast, it will be difficult to find gasoline less than $6.00 a gallon if you can find it at all, supermarket shelves will be bare as trucks stop delivering the goods, and if you heat your home with fuel oil you had better be rich or you may freeze to death in a cold Winter. Perhaps for investors making money as oil prices rise will offset some of those problems.

Current low prices for oil actually insure another great price spike. At current prices oil exploration projects are being cancelled, worn out equipment is not being replaced, alternative energy projects are being curtailed, oil drilling rigs are not being constructed, and more expensive to extract oil fields are not being developed. Once economic activity turns even slightly higher, or a disruption in the production of oil occurs due to war, political unrest, terrorism in say Saudi Arabia or any other oil producing nation, the price of oil could seriously reverse and once again race to the upside.

I recommend buying USO at current levels and building a position at any price below $30.00. While we could see new lows during this downturn once oil prices reverse the move could be extremely sharp and you could see $50 oil again in a flash. For certain oil prices will never go to zero and will probably never even come close to zero. As with any commodity there is intrinsic value in oil.

I think it is better to start accumulating positions now at attractive “blood in the street” prices rather then to chase after a price spike later. For patient investors this would offer the opportunity to buy at low prices and to see USO make new all time highs above $119.17 a share, probably within three years.

Disclosure: This information on United States Oil Fund LP Units ( USO ) is for your information only. Should you decide to purchase shares in USO you must rely upon your own research. FYI, and in the interest of full disclosure, I am beginning to accumulate long term option positions in USO.

Petrobras Brazil is a wonderful play in the energy sector. The current global recession fear has helped to beat the stock down from the $70’s last year to a current price of about $27.50.

While serving a rapidly growing domestic market in 2008, Petrobras exported a record volume of 673,000 barrels per day of oil and derivatives, 9.4% more than in 2007 and topping-out with a volumetric surplus of 103,000 barrels per day. Total exports amounted to $21.245 billion, 42.7% above a year earlier.

The vision for Petrobras Vision by 2020 is to be one of the five largest integrated energy companies in the world and the preferred choice among their share holders. Petrobras is one of the leading companies in the world in having technology for deep water recovery of oil assets.

The Company has several competitive advantages compared with its current and future competitors, the principal being:

1.) Dominant market position in the production, refining and transportation of oil and oil products in Brazil. Brazil is a rapidly developing nation;
2.) Significant and growing oil reserve base;
3.) Advanced technological know-how for deep water exploration;
4.) Reduced costs due to its operations being executed on a large scale and to the integrated nature of its operating segments;
5.) Solid position in the growing Brazilian natural gas markets; and
6.) Proven success in attracting international partners to all areas of the Company’s activities.

As of December 31st, 2008, the proven reserves of crude oil, condensate and natural gas in the fields under concession of Petrobras amounted to 14,093 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe), representing an increase of 1.2% in relation to 2007. In revealing its business plans and reserve figures.Petrobras Brazil is one of the world’s more transparent oil companies.

Last November, Petrobras (PBR), the state-controlled oil giant of Brazil, announced that it had found between 5 billion and 8 billion barrels of light, sweet crude in a field called “Tupi”. This field is wedged under a layer of salt deep beneath the floor of the Atlantic Ocean off the cost of Rio. Some geologists believe there is even more oil in the “pre-salt” fields.

Extracting oil from Tupi is a gigantic expensive technical challenge. The salt has acted as a “perfect seal” to preserve the oil, according the director of Petrobras’ projects in the pre-salt fields. With the drop in the price of oil over the past few months Petrobras is probably not in a hurry to develop this field. However, the Tupi discovery is one of the most significant oil finds in recent years and the field will be developed as oil prices escalate in coming years.

I do not expect crude oil to remain at current levels for very long. In my opinion peak oil has already arrived as maximum world production seems to be limited to about 85 million barrels a day. Major oil fields, like Mexico’s Cantarell field, are in a serious stage of depletion. Demand for oil has not declined by very much, even in the face of the world recession. The world is hooked on oil and alternative energy supplies will not make a dent in the total demand for oil, at least not in the foreseeable future.

At current price levels Petrobras is a compelling play. Current low prices for crude oil are due more than anything to the financial meltdown and the forced liquidation of hedge fund and investor positions in crude rather than supply and demand considerations. The world, even in recession, has a huge appetite for oil and oil products. Low prices are now setting the stage for another huge price spike. Due to low prices oil exploration and drilling projects are being cut back and the degree of oil that will be needed as the world economy rebounds will not be there.

Petrobras shares at current price levels gives the patient investor a wonderful opportunity to own shares in a well managed company, in a high growth rate economy, in an industry that is indispensable in an energy hungry world. As Mexico’s oil production continues to fall Brazil and Petrobras will likely become an ever more important exporter of oil to the US market.

Note: I am not an investment adviser. The information contained herein is for educational purposes only. You should conduct your own research before making any investment in any stock. That being said, it is my opinion that within three years a doubling, perhaps even a tripling, of Petrobras Brazil shares could occur.

Crude oil is by far the world’s most actively traded commodity, and the NYMEX Division light, sweet crude oil futures contract is the world’s most liquid forum for crude oil trading, as well as the world’s largest-volume futures contract trading on a physical commodity. Because of its excellent liquidity and price transparency, the contract is used as a principal international pricing benchmark. If you are an investor thinking of trading crude oil futures contracts you probably will want to trade the NYMEX contract.

In addition to crude oil futures contracts NYMEX offers a full range of energy related contracts that may be traded. Energy sector options on the futures contract are offered as well as trading in ; calendar spread options; crack spread options on the pricing differential of heating oil futures and crude oil futures, and gasoline futures and crude oil futures; and average price options.

The NYMEX futures crude oil contract trades in units of 1,000 barrels, and the delivery point is Cushing, Oklahoma, which is also accessible to the international spot markets via pipelines. The contract provides for delivery of several grades of domestic and internationally traded foreign crudes, and serves the diverse needs of the physical market.

There is usually good liquidity in the crude oil contracts but you should check the open interest and average daily trading volume in the contract months you wish to trade just to be sure that you would be trading an active contract.

For additional information you should consult with your commodity broker or head on over to the (NYMEX) New York Mercantile Exchange website. Trading futures crude oil is a fast paced and exciting speculative activity and is not for the faith hearted. You should enter the futures crude oil market only if you have unencumbered risk capital along with the stomach for frequent intense market volatility.

As one can readily see the price of crude oil is extremely volatile. While the slow down in demand caused by the (recession – depression?) is clearly evident the slowdown has not yet drastically reduced the demand for oil. A slowing of oil demand in the West is being at least partially offset by continued strong demand from India and China. While the economies of those two huge nations have slowed to a 5% to 6% growth rate that is still a lot of new energy demand in nations with such large populations. China and India together must have about 2.5 billion people, many who are demanding a more comfortable energy intensive life as their economies and incomes expand.

The supply of oil supplies over the next five years and beyond looks especially grim. Current lower prices are curtailing the exploration and development of not only new oil fields but of alternative energy sources. Energy conservation measures have cooled off as oil prices have declined. World oil production seems to have peaked at about 85 million barrels daily. With new oil production and exploration projects being shelved, at least for now while oil prices are relatively low, any increase in economic activity around the world can quickly lead to another oil price spike.

Crude oil price statistics will remain volatile and lively for many years to come. The probability of sharply higher prices by the end of 2009 remains high as the US Dollar will likely be under considerable downside pressure before then. The current “bailout” of the American economy and the printing of trillions of dollars of fiat currency by the US Treasury should insure that unhappy development. Since oil is still largely priced in US Dollars the fall of the Dollar will tend to increase the price of oil in Dollar terms.

How to invest in oil is a subject of interest to many traders in a world economy that is largely driven by the price and availability of products derived from products obtained from crude oil, like gasoline, diesel fuel, jet fuel, plastics, and fertilizer. It is hard to imagine a world in which these products are extremely expensive or not widely available but that could be the case within a few years.

Peak Oil is a term that most investors are now aware of. Yet the meaning of peak oil is widely misunderstood. It does not mean that the world is nearing a time where there is no oil available. Rather it refers to the rapidly developing situation in the production of oil where the major oil fields of the world are in a state of production decline and even with new technology no major easy to access oil fields have been recently discovered.

In other words, the easy to find, easy and inexpensive to pump, oil discoveries have already been found. There are important new oil fields that have been recently discovered, like the huge field off the coast of Brazil, but the oil field is a very deep field indeed and the oil will be quite expensive to pump and transport to refineries.

After reaching the ocean floor some 6,000 feet down the oil is still about 4,000 feet below the ocean floor in vast reservoirs. That oil will be very expensive to extract. It will probably be at least ten years before any oil is produced and that will happen only with much higher sustained prices than current prices for crude oil.

Even with a quick study of the dynamics in the crude oil market the investor will probably conclude that oil prices are headed higher, perhaps much higher, and probably not in the too distant future. We have already experienced a spike in oil prices to about $147 a barrel followed by a collapse to a low of about $33 a barrel.

The question then is how to invest in oil if you are a typical investor with limited resources? If you trade oil futures contracts the volatility of the market and the margin required to purchase contracts make oil trading a very risky venture, out of the reach of many traders. Even if you have the required money to purchase and to hang onto your positions you may not be able to stomach the gut churning volatility.

There is a solution that you may wish to consider. If you are convinced that within the next year oil prices may move to higher levels you may wish to consider buying call options in UNITED STATES OIL FUND LP UNITS (USO). At a present oil price of about $43 a barrel a Jan 2010 30 call in USO has a price of about $750 per call. Should oil prices once again spike to $70 to $100 a barrel or more prior to the Jan 2010 expiration date of the call you would do well with this speculation.

DISCLAIMER: This information is provided as education information about how to invest in oil if so inclined and not as specific investment advice. The price of the Jan 2010 USO 30 call carries a significant time premium. Timing the entry into the position should be done on weakness. Should the oil price not spike prior to the expiration of the call you could lose all of your investment.

Just because ones knows how to invest in oil doesn’t mean that one should do so. Certainly, as with any speculative investment, you should use only risk capital and be willing to accept and to afford a total loss of your funds should the price of oil stabilize at lower levels.

The statistics for world oil production are a little hard to come by in completely reliable numbers. There are two primary problems. One is that the most important oil producing nations, like Saudi Arabia, tend to keep secret their actual production numbers and publicize whatever statistics they want the world to view.

Another problem is the time lag between publicly available statistics and present production numbers. For example, the International Energy Agency has a fantastic online display of crude oil production statistics from around the world but the latest available statistics are from 2006.

Still the display at the International Energy Agency website is worth reviewing if you want to get a better handle for statistics world oil production.

Another source of world oil production information is the US government’s Energy Information Administration website at EIA.

A little time spend at these two websites should enable you to get a pretty good understanding of statistics world oil production and the rather grim outlook for the years ahead.
