Choosing a Wood Boiler Heating System

Choosing a Wood Boiler Heating System

by John Kron

Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are an old technology that is coming back into vogue in many places. The basic technology works like this: In a shed far from the house, you put a wood burning furnace which heats the water in a water container. Both the furnace and the water vat are insulated to keep the heat in. The heated water is then transported across the property, usually the yard, through pipes. It heats the house and the water that gets used inside it.

Outdoor wood boiler heaters are now more popular since they use wood, instead of utilizing fossil fuels. Natural gas, oil, and coal are not environmentally friendly. Wood, naturally, is a renewable heat source; it takes trees a while to grow, but they can be planted as needed. If you can afford the expense of installing the outdoor wood boiler heating system, then later you wont have gas bills for your heating system.

Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are used most often by people who live in rural areas. In some regions, these areas arent serviced by gas or electricity, but wood is plentiful and easy to come by. It has also been true in the past that wood boilers produced a lot of smoke, so the only people who could realistically use them were those who had no close neighbors to be bothered by it. However, new technologies in wood burning furnaces and boilers have significantly reduced the amount of smoke new appliances make, so outdoor wood boiler heating systems may soon be used much more widely in suburban areas.

For people in rural areas, outdoor wood boiler heating systems are also a good choice if you have out buildings to heat in addition to your home. The same boiler can be used to service all of your outbuildings, such as barns or work sheds; all you need to do is lay the pipes from the boiler shed to the other buildings, and the heated water will flow in that direction when it needs to. You dont have to install a different system for each building.

Wood boiler systems aren’t for everyone. The firebox will require loading daily, especially in the cold winter months. This means venturing outside and moving wood around, from wherever it is stored to the wood boiler. Since this heating system isn’t completely automated, someone will have to be around to supply it with wood daily to keep the system running. Also, you will need quite a bit of wood at all times.

Outdoor wood boiler heating systems are a lot of money up front to install. It will be a few years before they start to pay for themselves, although monthly heating bills will be lower immediately. A lot of people have decided it is worth it to switch to a wood boiler heating system.
