How Much Do Wind Turbines Cost?

How Much Do Wind Turbines Cost?

by Brian Bradley

Many times people get lured in by advertisements claiming that he can build a windmill in his backyard, but they hardly tell you about specific cost attached to each part of the windmill.

The idea that you could construct a wind turbine for around $50.00 is not feasible unless you already have many of the parts on hand.

If you want to build your own wind turbine from scratch, here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need:

1) A generator is necessary. An Ametek 30-40 vdc generator can be purchased on Ebay at a price between $30 and $50… This is a great choice, especially in lower wind speeds.

2) Sheet metal for the construction of the tail and body is available online or at the store for around five dollars.

3) You’ll need PVC pipe to make the rotor blades for your wind turbine – this is available for around $10, either online or at the hardware store.

4) To connect everything together, you need a “hub” – get it at your hardware store for $10, or make it yourself using circular metal alloy.

5) A Shaft or tower for support can be made out of old satellite TV towers or other materials purchased for around ten dollars.

6) To store your wind turbine’s energy, you need a deep cycle battery – $10 online, or free at your local golf course if they’re disposing of them.

7) Battery protection in the form of a Charge Controller will cost around $25.00 on Ebay.
8) You’ll also need a dump load to dispose of “extra” energy – use an old water heater or back-up battery pack for this, so it doesn’t cost you anything.

9) Assuming you’re using this wind turbine for your house, you’ll need an AC inverter – expect $50 to $75 depending on the wattage you require.

10) Finally, you need the appropriate hardware to attach the blades to the hub, as well as tools like screw drivers, sockets, and sandpaper – allot $10 to this.

We see that the costs of constructing a wind turbine are between $160 and $225, but if you have a few of these items already, theoretically, you could accomplish this for under one hundred dollars!
